OUTSTANDING STUDENTS IN THE MAJOR

 

 

The Annual Academic Honor Awards Assembly, recognizes outstanding students who have dedicated time, energy and talent to their academic achievement.  Department faculty nominate and vote for students receiving this honor.  Alumnus Samuel Murphy (‘06), who serves as the press secretary for Gov. Jay Nixon spoke at the Ceremony May 5th, 2009.

Caroline is a May 2009 Cum Laude graduate from Farmington, Mo. Caroline has been an enthusiast in the major. She has been involved in the Anthropology Club, helped with the Departmental Newsletter, and led Project: Logic of a Life's Work (a documentary focused on the logic that ties together the diverse anthropological career of Lewis Binford), as her senior capstone project in Sociology/Anthropology. This summer Caroline is serving as a Park Interpretation Guide at Montezuma's Castle in southern Arizona with the Student Conversation Association.  In the fall she will serve as a Rotary Cultural Ambassador in Russia.  Caroline is currently preparing for a career as an interpreter.

Lee Anne Flagg Outstanding Student in Sociology

Lee Anne is a May 2009 Summa Cum Laude graduate from New Berlin, Wisconsin. She has a double major in Exercise Science and Sociology/Anthropology and is a member of Phi Beta Kappa, the nation's oldest undergraduate academic honor society in the liberal arts and sciences. Lee Anne has been very active in Students for Social Change throughout her college years. Last August, she was selected to participate in the Undergraduate Honors Program at the American Sociological Association (ASA) at their annual meeting in Boston. Participation in the Honors Program provides a significant socialization experience early in the careers of the next generation of sociologists. This past spring she presented "Lift for Life: Does Sports Participation Prevent Delinquency" at the Undergraduate Research Conference.   Starting this August Lee Anne will pursue a PhD in Medical Sociology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
